In the new literary translation manual published by Leuven University Press "Alles verandert altijd. Perspectieven op literair vertalen" (which we talked about in the article "Literary translation, a one-of-a-kind practical guide" published in The Language Sector), one contribution mentions the "privileged" position of literary translators working in Flanders and Netherlands, compared to translators working in other countries.

Literary translation nowadays is one of the most popular areas of translation. What do you need to do, what do you need to know to create an enjoyable literary translation?
Literary translators may find useful the manual "Alles verandert altijd. Perspectieven op literair vertalen," published recently by Leuven University Press. "Alles verandert altijd. Perspectieven op literair vertalen" (meaning "Everything changes, always. Perspectives on literary translation") is a 278-page manual that brings together the contributions of 23 experts in the field of translation.
It is a unique work: it deals not only with the rules, the art of translation or the skills necessary to work in the field of literary translation, but it also deals with the economic and financial aspects, the basic knowledge and skills that literary translation requires and subsequent operations of review, marketing and promotion.

In the European Union there are 24 official languages, as well as other less widely used languages and the languages spoken by immigrants. In such a linguistically and culturally diverse context, we understand that translation is a priority. The European identity is built on the pillars of multilingualism and diversity. Translation in general, but literary translation, especially, is the medium that allows Europe to possess these features and stay connected.
Literary translation is very present in our lives. We've all, at some point, read a classic of the English, French, Italian or Greek literature, and most of the time we did so with a translation into our mother tongue. We can say, therefore, that literary translation is an important activity. However, the conditions surrounding this profession are not ideal; the status of European literary translators needs to improve.

The European Commission provides almost 300,000 euros to allow collaboration in the fragmented field of the literary translation trainings in Europe. There will be a European reference framework for the literary translator, similar to the common European Reference Framework for learning Foreign Languages. The new reference framework will describe what a good literary translator must know and must be able to do at different levels (e.g. knowledge of source and target language, knowledge of literature and culture of source and target language, professional practice).

Literary translation is a very specific box which you different talents and skills in house. Experience also plays an important role in addition. However, it seems that the both for trainers as translators is useful to get more insight in the learning process. The Flemish Fund for the Arts (VFL) goes out to three times per year stimuleringssubsidies novice literary translators. The VFL does that to the translator the financial muscle and extra motivation to skilling in the box of the literary translation and so his position on the literary-to strengthen.

Grants for the translation of literary works Argentina

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina has since 2009 grants for the translation of Spanish Argentine literary work: Programa SUR. Thanks to the program more than 400 works translated into 34 languages, including 9 in the Dutch Language. New applications must end september.
European Literature Prize for Flemish vertalersduo

The European Literary Prize is a relatively young price. He goes to the best in the Dutch translated novel of the past year. The price is this year for the third time and is distributed to the roman Limonov of the French author Emmanuel Carrère in a duovertaling of Sainte Catherine The Vuyst and Katrien Vandenberghe. 'The position of the translators in the uitgeefproces is often to say weak, certainly in this crisis. There are publishers who without blushing, for profit, for a cheap translation choose and that is often not the best. But between the State and the literary translators there are good contacts. I think that we need to find each other even better. We need each other. I want to work with you the fight for the real issue as to the future of literary translation goes: good translations, respect for the translator and a proper compensation.'

There was never in the Flemish bookshop more translated fiction than today. Nevertheless, the Flemings all fiction in the Dutch translation to count on one hand. The Flemish Auteursvereniging (VAV) examined the situation of the literary translator in Flanders and paints a chiling and sad profile: the literary translator is a highly educated, not more so young bijklusser. The Flemish Auteursvereniging (VAV) has the first results of a long-term research on the income and the socio-economic situation of authors published in Flanders. The summary is that the literary sector in the last 20 years to a certain extent is de schutter but that only one of the five authors of the pin can live.
