EUR 11.4 million. So much money, Flanders and The Netherlands in september 2004 - exactly ten years ago - on the table to ensure that the Dutch digital would survive.
Or a language digital survives, depends on the extent to which a number of essential digital facilities are present which you need to have an application with language or speech technology to develop - whether that is a spellingchecker is, a vertaalmachine, a gps with voice, a voice newspaper for the blind, etc. Basic Raw Materials that you need for this again and again, for example, a computerlexicon or a large digital collection texts or recordings of spoken language. All the raw materials together form the digital infrastructure that allows a language digital can survive.
Of course it is even better if the raw materials are centrally collected and managed without much fuss and if they can be used and reused. So anyone who wants to do with language or speech technology, not constantly reinventing the wheel to find out. This would, of course, not be efficient, they must have thought ten years ago. That is why today there is already ten years a unique counter where everyone who want to do something with language or voice quality basic raw materials can go and get to the fun and valuable products or services to. That unique counter is called the TST-Centrale (Central for Language and Speech Technology) and in its shop window are some eighty such raw materials: especially lexica and corpora, but also software and digital dictionaries. Approximately half of those raw materials comes from one program: STEVIN, which stands for Voice and Taaltechnologische Essential Facilities In the Netherlands.
What is there of STEVIN? We have received for our money? Who does actually need something? And what? Someone has also benefit? In the linguistic sector, and beyond?
The Linguistic Sector early the STEVIN-coordinator Peter Spyns and Remco van Veenendaal of the TST-Central. Taaltechnologiebedrijf GridLine (from Amsterdam) testifies.
